This week’s pick is ‘Racist, Sexist Boy’ by The Linda Lindas.
Paying attention to our anger and reflecting on what it means is so important, especially for women and girls whose boundaries are often crossed. Despite the confusing emotional brainwash we all cary, it’s an important guiding emotion for everyone.
This song was born out of a school boy saying his father told him to stay away from Chinese people. After one of the band members told him she herself is Chinese, he started ignoring her. The lyrics are very straightforward – ‘Racist, sexist boy / You are a racist, sexist boy / And you have racist, sexist joys / We rebuild what you destroy’ – and I love that. There’s so much unnecessary fluff in our communication, and being indirect can diminish our power.
This week, try to appreciate your power and see your emotions for what they are. Surrender yourself to the wildness of them – without hurting anyone – and begin the journey of decoding what messages they might hold.
With digital fairy greetings,
Martina
